Bangkok Bank reports a net profit of Baht 21,423 million for the first half of 2023

The Thai economy continued to expand in the second quarter of 2023, driven mainly by the tourism sector following an increase in the number of foreign tourists, which contributed to the improvement in private confidence and consumption. Meanwhile, exports were dampened by subdued global demand. Looking ahead, the Thai economy continues to face risks from global economic uncertainties, especially from high and persistent inflation as well as the possibility of a sluggish economy and recession in major economies, global financial market volatility, and prolonged geopolitical tensions. These are important factors that need to be closely monitored.

Although the Thai economy continued to expand, the global economy remained uncertain due to the volatility in financial markets and the changes in the new global context towards the environment, society and governance (ESG). Business operations continued to face challenges from a new competitive environment as well as opportunities from wider markets, led by digital technologies and innovations that have dramatically changed in the recent years, along with the need for businesses to meet ESG requirements and volatility in the financial markets. Bangkok Bank reports a net profit of Baht 21,423 million for the first half of 2023

The Bank and its subsidiaries report a net profit for the first half of 2023 of Baht 21,423 million, an increase of 52.2 percent from the same period last year. This is due mainly to an increase in net interest income of 36.0 percent following the rise in interest rates from higher yields on earning assets, net of an increase in cost of deposits and the resumption of the FIDF fee at a normal rate since the beginning of this year, resulting in the net interest margin increasing to 2.88 percent. Net fees and service income was at a similar level to the first half of 2022. Operating expenses rose by 18.3 percent following an increase in economic activities, and partly from expenses for operational efficiency improvement. Meanwhile, the cost to income ratio declined to 47.1 percent. According to consistently setting aside expected credit losses, the Bank provided the similar level of expected credit losses as the previous quarter. As a result, the expected credit losses for the first half of 2023 amounted to Baht 17,354 million.

Bangkok Bank maintains a healthy financial position, high liquidity and capital positions under its prudent management approach for strong and sustainable growth

At the end of June 2023, the Bank’s total loans amounted to Baht 2,698,304 million, rising 0.6 percent from the end of last year, mainly due to an increase in loans to large corporate customers and loans made through the Bank’s international network. The ratio of non-performing loans to total loans was at a manageable level of 2.9 percent. The Bank continues to prudently set aside expected credit losses, leading to a robust allowance for expected credit losses to non-performing loans ratio of 287.1 percent.

As of June 30, 2023, the Bank’s deposits amounted to Baht 3,200,155 million, a similar level compared to the end of last year. The loan to deposit ratio stood at 84.3 percent. In terms of capital, the total capital adequacy ratio, Tier 1 capital adequacy ratio, and Common Equity Tier 1 capital adequacy ratio of the Bank and its subsidiaries stood at 19.1 percent, 15.7 percent and 14.9 percent respectively, comfortably above the Bank of Thailand’s minimum capital requirements.

Bangkok Bank received two awards for sustainability from Global Finance, a global financial magazine, and one from FinanceAsia, a regional financial magazine, reflecting its success as a regional financial institution with expertise, experience and commitment to sustainable growth. The Bank continues to focus its business development on five sustainability themes while being a trusted partner to stakeholders and continuing its journey of creating value for a sustainable future.

Bangkok Bank Executive Vice President and Corporate Finance Department Manager Prasert Deejongkit said Bangkok Bank received three sustainability awards, namely: Best Bank for Sustainable Finance in Thailand and Outstanding Leadership in ESG-Related Loans for Asia Pacific from the Sustainable Awards 2023 of Global Finance, a leading English financial magazine; and Best Sustainable Bank in Thailand in 2023 from FinanceAsia, a leading financial and investment magazine in Asia-Pacific. The awards reflect Bangkok Bank’s success as a leading regional bank with outstanding expertise, extensive financial experience, and commitment to sustainable development.

The awards were judged on various sustainability metrics such as: policy and standards, the development of financial products and services with ESG considerations, targets and timelines for sustainable finance, measurement of sustainable finance, achievement of sustainable finance, and third-party reviews.

The Bank plays an important role in funding sustainability activities of leading government and private organizations in Thailand. In 2022, the Thai capital market had a total value of ESG bonds issuance of Baht 157,463 million, of which Baht 119,145 million, or 76 percent of the total ESG bond issuance, was underwritten by the Bank. In addition, the Bank supported loans for renewable energy totaling 88.1 billion baht, and, in the same year, issued a credit line of 17.8 billion baht or 28.1 percent of the total loans for the construction of two new electric train lines in Bangkok and its vicinity. The Bank also offered a special loan program for SME, Bualuang Green Loan, with a total credit line of over 1,200 million baht, to meet the needs of entrepreneurs wishing to invest in renewable energy projects such as solar, wind, and hydro power. In 2023, the Bank has provided Bualuang Green Solar Energy to meet the needs of customers in installing solar rooftops and offered transformation loans under the Soft Loan Emergency Decree for entrepreneurs wishing to invest in the development of digital technology, green business operations, or technology and innovation, in order to enhance their business potential and competitiveness.

Bangkok Bank and PermataBank collaborate to facilitate Letter of Credit on blockchain to enter the Thai-Indonesian chemical market, offering smooth transactions and encouraging digitalized processes in line with the concept of green business for sustainable growth

Bangkok Bank and PermataBank collaborated to facilitate a Letter of Credit (L/C) through blockchain technology, highlighting the strength of both banks’ cross-border business networks to enter the Thai-Indonesian chemical market. The first customers are TPE and Lautan Luas which use trade finance services to help reduce the process, risks and costs. This will increase customer satisfaction while supporting businesses to digitalize their work processes in line with the concept of green business for sustainable growth.

Bangkok Bank Executive Vice President Pipat Assamongkol said, “International trade is crucial for a country's economic growth. International trade transactions need multi-step processes and require a large amount of paper documents which is a major obstacle. To help resolve this problem, the Bank has developed blockchain technology innovation for L/C, a service that uses Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) or Enterprise Blockchain Platform as an integral part of the work to provide full commercial services*.”

The Bank recently joined PermataBank to provide this innovation to both banks’ customers in the chemical industry. Bangkok Bank reports a net profit of Baht 10,129 million for the first quarter

The Thai economy continued to expand in the first quarter of 2023, driven mainly by an increase in the number of foreign tourists, which promoting employment and private consumption. At the same time, exports show signs of rebounding after contractions in the previous period. Looking ahead, the Thai economy continues to face risks from the subduing global economy, persistent inflationary pressure, prolonged geopolitical conflicts, and episodes of banking stresses in advanced economies. Bangkok Bank reports a net profit of Baht 10,129 million for the first quarter of 2023

Bangkok Bank and its subsidiaries reported a net profit of Baht 10,129 million in the first quarter of 2023, increasing from the fourth quarter of 2022. Net interest income was at a similar level to the previous quarter from higher interest income following the rise in interest rates, offsetting higher interest expenses due to the increase in deposit rate and the resumption of the FIDF fee at a normal rate of 0.46 percent. The net interest margin was 2.84 percent. Non-interest income increased mainly from gains on financial instruments measured at FVTPL in line with the market situation, and net fees and service income slightly increased. The cost to income ratio declined to 46.8 percent. In accordance with the Bank's prudent management, the expected credit losses were set aside at Baht 8,474 million, considering global economic volatility that may affect the Thai economy's recovery in the future.

Bangkok Bank maintains a healthy financial position, robust liquidity and capital positions under its prudent management approach for sustainable growth

At the end of March 2023, the Bank’s loans amounted to Baht 2,640,090 million, a slight decrease of 1.6 percent from the end of 2022, due mainly to loans to business customers and loans made through the Bank’s international network. The ratio of non-performing loans to total loans was at a manageable level of 3.1 percent. Given the Bank continues to set aside expected credit losses in line with its prudent approach, the ratio of allowance for expected credit losses to non-performing loan remained strong at 265.1 percent.

As of March 31, 2023, the Bank’s deposits amounted to Baht 3,205,989 million, the same level as the end of 2022. The loan to deposit ratio was 82.3 percent. Meanwhile, the total capital adequacy ratio, Tier 1 capital adequacy ratio, and Common Equity Tier 1 capital adequacy ratio of the Bank and its subsidiaries were 19.2 percent, 15.7 percent and 14.9 percent respectively, comfortably above the Bank of Thailand’s minimum capital requirements.

New customers who open an e-Savings account with Bangkok Bank Mobile Banking will receive 200 AIS points for their first online purchase via the card, while existing customers who apply for the card will receive 100 AIS points for their first online purchase via the card. What’s more, every 200 baht spent on online shopping via the Be1st Digital AIS POINTS card will receive one AIS point, for up to 100 points per card per month. Bangkok Bank is Thailand’s first bank to expand L/C service via commercial blockchain to the oil and gas industries, joining with Bangchak in providing the service, reinforcing its position as a ‘trusted partner’ enhancing efficiency
and reducing transaction time for customers

Bangkok Bank is Thailand’s first bank to expand a full service of L/C on Blockchain via Contour to the oil and gas industries. The Bank has joined with Bangchak to launch a new service for overseas partners which reduces the transaction time from three days to less than three hours. The service is fast and convenient, digitalizes all processes and is available for customers right away.

Bangkok Bank Executive Vice President Pipat Assamongkol said the Bank has launched L/C on Blockchain, an innovation that makes trade finance easier and more efficient. This is Thailand’s first full L/C on Blockchain service. Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited has selected Bangkok Bank’s L/C on Blockchain to open L/C with trade partners’ banks overseas and it plans to continually use this service for transactions starting from February onwards. The initial Bangchak transaction is also Bangkok Bank’s first L/C on Blockchain provided to a business in the oil and gas industry

“This is another major success story for trade finance service’s development as it brings in a new technology to support the working process to be faster and more efficient. All processes for this service will be digital and paperless while it will reduce the L/C transaction time from three days to less than three hours. The trade finance transactions are recurrent, so the service will clearly enhance business efficiency”

Ms. Phatpuree Chinkulkitnivat, Senior Executive Vice President, Accounting and Finance, Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited said Bangchak is committed to drive transformation in the energy business by focusing on continually developing innovation for sustainable business operations. Bringing in Blockchain to upgrade the L/C transaction process for Bangchak’s international trade is another major move by Bangchak to increase its operational efficiency. Joining with Bangkok Bank in using Blockchain technology for electronic L/C transactions via Contour, a leading platform provider, with world class security standards, is another step to enhance Bangchak’s international trade transactions as its partners can check transaction details clearly and transparently.

Mr. Pipat said Bangkok Bank is the first and only Thai bank that joined with world leading banks and partners to establish Contour and it has been participating in the service development since 2019. The Bank also trialed Cross Bank L/C on Blockchain on the Contour Network with three major clients at the beginning of 2021, which went smoothly and effectively and met the needs of trade finance customers, both importers and exporters. Subsequently, the service was fully commercialized and launched in November, 2021.

Up to now 20 banks have joined Contour, covering more than 50 countries worldwide in Europe, American, Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific. A highlight of L/C on Blockchain is that it uses Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), or the Enterprise Blockchain Platform, which enables customers to conduct all transaction processes digitally, so all trade partners can see real-time data and make transactions quickly, transparently, greatly reducing operational costs compared with the traditional paper process. This is in line with the current and future international trade situation that will require speed and secure transactions.

Bangkok Bank invites customers to invest in Japanese real estate which is 30% cheaper due to the weakest yen in a half-century and low interest rates.As a ‘trusted partner’ Bangkok Bank takes Thai businesses and investors to Samurai land

Bangkok Bank says there are great opportunities to invest in real estate in Japan’s tourism sector as the yen has depreciated by 30% and is at its weakest level in past 50 years. The Bank can provide loans in the local currency so people can take advantage of negative interest rates and eliminate currency exchange risks, while taking advantage of trends such as the aging society and the rising youth market. The Bank has a deep understanding of the Japanese market as a ‘trusted partner’ that takes Thai businesses to Japan.

Mr. Thawee Phuangketkeow, Senior Vice President and General Manager – Japan Branches and the Tokyo Branch Manager said the yen has depreciated by 25 – 30% which is a rare occurrence that only happens once in 50 years. This is a great opportunity for High Net Worth customers and Thai entrepreneurs interested in investing in assets in Japan at s special low price, especially real estate, land, houses and condominiums Japanese law allows foreigners to own real estate for both investment and to live.

“We believe the government of Japan will continue to attract tourists in the long term to boost economic growth and the hospitality sector will be a major industry. Large international hotel chains currently compete to invest in these assets for their business expansion and they are also enjoying benefits from the weak yen which only happens once in 50 years. There are opportunities for Thai entrepreneurs to invest in Japan for business or to buy assets to live. Many people buy condominiums in Hokkaido to stay a month per year for their ski trip. There are Asset Management companies that can help manage the properties by renting them out under the Airbnb scheme including daily, weekly, monthly rentals which generates income”.

For future opportunities in Japan, Mr. Thawee said two interesting markets are the aging society, as people aged 65 and over account for 30% of population. They have their lifetime savings and focus on consuming services that make their life convenient e.g. healthy food delivery or full service hotels. Another market is teenagers. This group is growing in number but they don’t have high purchasing power, they don’t cook and prefer economically priced food, but they don’t care about a brand. These teenagers are not interested in full-service hotels but prefer to stay at Airbnb accommodation.

Mr. Thawee said that businesses or individuals investing in Japan may apply for loans from financial institutions instead of using their own capital as Japan’s interest rate is still very low and there are negative deposit interest rates. Loans should be made in yen to reflect income in yen to reduce risks from currency exchange. This is an important market opportunity for Bangkok Bank’s Japan branches because Bangkok Bank is the only Thai bank in Japan that provides a full financial service and it has a license to operate a financial institution which is similar to local banks. This means the Bank can provide deposit and loan services in local currency and can fulfill customers’ needs.
